Pasadena, CA - Many lower back and other muscular-skeletal complaints are actually the result of short leg syndrome, explains Cesar Lua, from Novis Shoes, a company selling orthopedic shoes.
He advises people about short leg syndrome's symptoms and describes how to take care of the condition using orthopedic footwear.
"The human body is designed for the head and shoulders to balance over the feet," points out Lua. "But a leg length discrepancy of as little as 0.5 centimeters requires the body to compensate for the inequity and puts everything out of balance. People can spend lots of money trying to figure out what causes the pain, when it's actually an inequity between the lengths of their legs."
This discrepancy can create a chain reaction throughout the muscles and joints in your legs and back. Thus leg length problems are a common, although often unrecognized, cause of chronic leg and lower back pain, foot and ankle pain, fatigue, TMJ disorder and poor balance.
"Although leg and back pain are the symptoms of leg length discrepancy, they aren't the only ones," cautions Lua, who sells shoe inserts. Other signs of potential short leg syndrome include: tilted shoulders, uneven arm swinging, pelvic tilt, feet that roll too much to one side or the other (supinated or pronated) or a knee that is usually flexed when walking. If you suspect short leg syndrome, you can measure your legs with a tape measure, but a spinal X-ray is better. Many doctors prefer to get a 3-D postural radiographic study to determine the full extent of the problem.
"The best way to treat short leg syndrome is with shoe lifts," explains Lua, who also sells arch support shoes. "The lifts could be external on the shoe or they can be shoe inserts. Patients sometimes need to experiment with different lift heights to ascertain what is the best amount of lift for their condition."
"If you need a shoe lift," explains Lua, a seller of orthotic shoes, "you can mail us the shoe. We will return it (with no postage due) with the custom-made shoe lift no later than three days after we receive it."
